Sport and PE
At Alpington and Bergh Apton Primary School, we believe that Physical education and sport have a vital role to play in the development of our children. Our curriculum delivers fun, stimulating and competitive PE for all. Children learn the importance of keeping active and how this can improve their physical and mental development, stamina and creative movement.
Our curriculum values shine through our PE curriculum:
In lessons, children are curious learners. They learn and develop new skills in a broad range of sports and activities. Children of all ages are given opportunities to compete as individuals and as part of a team both in school (intra) and with other schools (inter).
They become thoughtful learners who collaborate and communicate effectively with others when performing. As they move through the school, the children make thoughtful use of tactics in game situations.
During PE, our children learn and demonstrate empathy. They show values of fairness and respect towards themselves, their team mates, opposition and officials. They encourage one another whether they are winning or loosing.
Our children develop stamina, suppleness, strength and agility as well as the determination and the resilience to keep going even when it can be hard work.
Inclusion for all is fundamental and all children become aspirational learners who evaluate their skills in order to reach their personal best. They always celebrate the success of others, and use this to inspire themselves or to inspire others.
PE and sport teaches our children to be courageous. They are taught the importance of exercise for their physical and mental wellbeing, and this is key for them to lead active and healthy lives in the future.

They are taught by a qualified swimming instructor at Hobart High School, and supported by other trained members of staff. Children who are unable to confidently swim 25m towards the end of year 6, attend additional sessions within small groups, before they leave our school.
